Galiani, F (1728.12.2-87.10.30)
Birthplace Chieti, Italy.
Posts Helds Secretary, Neapolitan Embassy, Paris, 1759-69; Civil Servant, mainly in econ. depts., 1769-87. Publications Books:1.On Money (1750, 1977); 2. Dialogue sur le commerce des blés (1770, 1968).
Career His economic ideas were eclectic, and despite his long residence in France he largely rejected physiocracy. He developed a value theory with a considerable subjective element. His discussion of interest did not concern its morality, but explored the reasons why it is paid; he described it as a payment for the lender's risk in parting with his money. Plolicy prescriptions are largely confined to his Dialogue... which recognises the need to adjust economic principle in accordance with historical and geographical circumstance.
