Gervaise, I (1700s)
Birthplace Paris, France.
Publications Books: 1. The System or Theory of the Trade of the World (1720, 1954).
Career Eighteenth-century Huguenot merchant in London known only for his System . This was a general equilibrium treatment of international trade containing an analysis of the various causes of disequilibrium. It is also unusual for its clear statement of the case for free trade at a time when such ideas were almost unheard of. The quality of Gervaise's argument and his intimate practical understanding of economic phenomena are both remarkable.
